Catalan boats in Argelès-sur-Mer

Discover the colorful traditional Catalan boats at the Port d’Argelès-sur-Mer. They blend in perfectly with all the beautiful rigging, which seems to be part of a decor from another time.

 A place for tradition

Catalan barques are traditional boats used mainly on the Mediterranean coast of Catalonia, a region in northeastern Spain. These boats have a distinctive design characterized by a pointed bow and flat bottom, making them suitable for sailing in the shallow waters of coastal creeks and harbors.

Traditionally, Catalan barques were used for inshore fishing, transporting goods and sometimes even smuggling during periods of trade restrictions. They are often built of wood and can vary in size, from small boats for one or two people to larger boats for larger crews.

Today, although many aspects of maritime life have evolved, Catalan barques remain an important symbol of Catalonia’s maritime and cultural identity. They are often used for recreational purposes, such as leisure fishing or sightseeing trips along the coast.

These traditional boats add a picturesque touch to the coastal landscape and offer visitors an authentic experience of Catalan maritime culture.
