Argelès-sur-Mer boasts more than 8,000 century-old pine trees, including 2,000 in the Bois des Pins. It was in 1854 that the commune took the initiative of planting a 12-hectare pine forest on the seafront. More than 160 years later, the Bois des Pins is still the green lung of Argelès and the symbol of the resort.
In the 1930s, the Bois des Pins became the site of the first municipal campsite. In order to preserve the renewal of the species, the town undertook successive regenerations (1978, 1981, 1984), replanting 1,500 pines.
To preserve the pine forest, the replantings are a mix of umbrella pine and maritime pine.
